At the peak of its popularity, New York's Catskills region was home to hundreds of hotels, vacation bungalows, and clubs where top comedians and other performers regularly appeared. But the region's economic decline saw many of them close, falling victim to fire, vandalism, wrecking balls, and decay. Photographer Marisa Scheinfeld spent years documenting the fate of those places through a series of evocative images, now collected in her new book.

End Date: December 16, 2016
Location Name: Herter Art Gallery (West gallery)
Hours: Mon-Fri 11-4, Sun 1-4pm
Address: UMass
City/Town: Amherst

The artist describes the ideas animating her work thusly: "...In November of 2014 my father-in-law passed away from a brain tumor. There was a yearbook on the table of memorabilia at his wake from 1956. I was drawn to the elementary school photos. The kids spoke to me in ways that I cannot explain in its fullness. When we got home to Massachusetts I made a large-scale painting inspired by the 60 yearbook photos, looking for the reason of their impact."

The paintings in Hyperopia are inspired by scenes of Western Massachusetts that include Mt. Sugarloaf, the Quabbin Reservoir, and the Connecticut River. The paintings play with the notion of time of day, distance, and other factors that impact our perception of the landscape. As Hyperopia suggests: Things seen up close may appear indecipherable, and may only be understood viewed from a distance.
